Our market leading range of Librateric Cocamidopropyl Betaines include both high and low active formulations made with either CNO, PKO or fatty acid with a variety of preservative systems to suit your needs.

Betaines are classified as amphoteric surfactants, compounds that have both positive and negative charges in the same molecule. The negative charge on the molecules hydrophilic end helps the surfactant molecules lift and suspend soils in micelles.

Our EFfCI accreditation (European Federation for Cosmetic Ingredients) provides assurance that Librateric Betaines are of the highest quality, specifically designed for use in Personal Care and HI&I applications. All Librateric betaines have high purity, low residuals, and excellent stability over a wide pH range. Our Betaines also offer excellent compatibility with anionic, non-ionic, and cationic surfactants.

Why use Librateric: Betaines?

Librateric Betaines are produced in our recently constructed purpose-built World-Class plant with AI self-learning process control, which allows us to minimise undesirable impurities and residuals in our products. As betaine naturally contains salt, our reactors are made from a salt-resistant, duplex alloy steel, which prevents iron contamination in the product.

The Free amine specification is < 0.3% (industry norm is <0.5%) and free MCA is <10ppm (industry norm is <20ppm), hence cause less irritancy to the mucus membranes, and are mild to the skin. This makes them ideal for Personal Care applications, particularly rinse-off hair, and body products such as shampoo, conditioner, hand soaps and shower & body wash. The Librateric range provides excellent viscosity building and foam boosting to complement anionic based cleansers. In shampoo formulations, they also help to condition the hair and reduce static build-up.

Librateric betaines do not contain any detectable Nitrosamines (External Laboratory Test, LOD 15 ppb), the European Regulation for cosmetic raw materials is < 50ppb.

The Librateric range properties

Our high-quality range of Librateric Cocamidopropyl Betaines (CAB) are manufactured from low colour and low odour feedstock. The CAB molecule is produced with dimethylaminopropylamine (DMAPA) with either fatty acids, coconut oil or palm kernel oil.

Our high active Librateric Betaines (CAB50 and CABPK) are 25% more concentrated than other grades, which makes them hostile to microbial growth, eliminating the need for preservatives.

Betaines usually have a salt content of circa 5.5%. Contact us if you require a low-salt version.

Libra’s Betaine Manufacturing Plant

Our tech-savvy Betaine plant has been designed, built, and fully commissioned to include a 30,000-litre intermediate Cocamidopropyl amine reactor, two alkylation reactors one of 60,000 litres, another of 35,000 litres and a distillation column.

The Betaine plant’s alkylation reactors are constructed from an innovative duplex alloy. Betaine contains salt, which can react with ordinary 304 and 316L stainless steel, resulting in iron contamination in the product from the reactor wall. The duplex alloy provides superior pitting and crevice corrosion resistance to prevent contamination.

The computerised plant is fully automated and its AI (artificial intelligence) system adapts the process and improves product quality. The plant also has a large, dedicated tank farm to hold raw materials and finished products, with storage tanks of up to 100 tonnes capacity each.

The Betaine plant is accredited to the European Federation for Cosmetic Ingredients (EFfCI) specification for both UK and EU export markets. The EFfCI accredited reactors, vessels, equipment, and operating protocols provides assurance and confidence that our products are manufactured to the highest quality standards for the Personal Care and HI&I Cleaning market.

Plant Capacity and Efficiency

The Betaine plant delivers an impressive additional production capacity of over 32,000 tonnes per annum of amphoteric surfactants. The plant can produce 635 Tonnes per week (32,800tpa) at full capacity.

The plant’s high yield and energy efficiency can generate up to 60 tonnes per batch from just one of the reactors.

Also, the plant has been designed with additional future capacity in mind, which can be increased to over 53,000 tonnes per annum with the installation of just one extra 60,000 litre reactor.

Pack Formats

Librateric betaines are available in bulk road tankers, bulk iso-containers, 1,000kg intermediate bulk containers and 200kg drums.
